Why CNY is great

1. Everyone seems to be blogging happy things!
2. Ang baos = MONEY!
3. Family gatherings rock socks!
4. I like it when the house is lively and noisy! And nobody really complains and calls the police even after 11p.m.!
5. Visiting and travelling across Singapore!
6. FOOD. *drools*
7. CNY is a wonderful reason to procrastinate, not go online, and not to do any work.
8. Vulgarities are less often heard!
9. CNY songs! (Sorry if you hate them. But I really missed them last year when I was away!)
10. New clothes/shoes/bags/ *insert random item you bought* (whichever you have bought)

It's different this year

Because he's not around anymore.

And Grandma's in hospital, recuperating.

On a bright note, CNY is 'get-fat' week! :P

Frustration

It frustrates me to no end when others don't understand the situation at home. Haven't they heard of 家家有本难念的经?

Dirty linen are not to be put in public. If things are bad, what can one do except to put a brave front, smile as if there's nothing wrong, and simply hope things will be better?

And gosh, it's exactly people born with silver spoons (even gold, diamond and all kind of expensive spoons) who are capable of zero understanding of plights.

Sometimes, dramas are not just dramas. If you have looked at the MediaCorps variety show hosted by Quan Yifeng and Christopher Lee (the one where they helped poor and helpless families) and wondered where on earth the crew got such wonderful actors and actresses, please continue burying your head in the sand. Ostriches die young anyway.

I'm better off not rebutting. Because every single rebuttal draws more frustration on my part, and shows more ignorance on yours.

Gone with the 8, here comes the 9

2008 has breezed past without even me realising much. Like last year, I'm going to do a summary of my year! But first, let's see if I've done what I set out to do last year...
1. Remain optimistic
Well, I guess it wasn't that hard. :)

2. Continue giving more than 100% in the things I do
Similarly, I guess this have to do with personality. Like they say, a leopard never change its spots. This is natural. :D

3. Take initiative to do things that I want
Hm... I probably didn't do that much on this, since there wasn't a lot that I wanted?

4. Keep my temper under check, especially towards people I love
Ha, quite a good job for the first 6 months, 'cos I was away. :X Maybe I should keep my mood under check instead.

5. Read more
I finished a few short stories book, in Chinese. But I guess I really didn't try hard enough for this... Unless, of course, if you count journals.

6. Speak good words, do good actions, cultivate good thoughts
Actions, okay. But I think I scolded more of the f word this year. More so than ever.

7. Be generous with my love and spread the goodwill
Wah, I am generous, but I think I showered them on a few people only! :P

And for the list of major things I did in 2008...

1. I left Singapore for 6 months. 6 months alone in China, Shanghai. It was indeed changing and eye-opening!

2. I experienced an earthquake! Although it was supposed to be a major disaster for the people of Sichuan, but the tremors felt over in Shanghai was enough only to excite and let us experience our first (and hopefully, only and last) earthquake.

3. I saw SNOW! Need I say more?

4. I lost my Ah Gong. :( But he gave me the power to do much more.

5. I learnt to treasure those around me more than ever. The 6 months absence and the loss of my loved one made me care more about those who really matters. Others? They can step aside till I have the time and energy for them.

6. I became a "counsellor". Though I was not involved per se, I was stuck like kaya/jam/melted cheese. Terrible times... >.<>

7. I have wonderful FYP mates! ^^

8. I found someone special! >.<

Overall, the year has been enriching. Life is about winning some and losing others. You gain something, but you also lose something else.

And the wishes for 2009? I don't know! I seem to fare quite badly at coming up with resolutions and wishes. They are too 'practical' and will almost 100% achieved!

On second thoughts, my first big wish will be to get a dream job (and hopefully, with a dream pay too)!

What're your 2009 wishes?

All girls want to be a princess!

Or at least to someone.

It may stem way back from childhood when we read about princesses and princes living happily ever after.
It may also be due to those pretty dresses that we were made to wear.
It may probably be explained by the little girl in us that calls and craves for "special treatment" and tender loving care.

Whatever the reason, all girls want to be treated like a princess by at least someone.

When she was young, that "someone" will be her dad. Little girls are always the princesses in their daddies' hearts.

Fetching her around, making sure she have enough to eat, bringing her to the beach to play and piggy-backing her to the doctor when she's sick/injured... All these little things show that she's the princess in his heart, that he will never turn her back on her, that he will always love her.

And when the girl grows up, someone else wants to take over that role. Fetch her around, make her happy, take care of her...

But sometimes that person forgets.

Afterall, who can be as selfless as one's parents?

Exams are over!

Shh... Examination in Progress!

But I'm done! *victory* I officially done with exams in my LIFE! :D

And to give myself a pat on the back, I had this Lamington Burger (recommended by Dajie and co.) at the school cafe! Fats are good for spirits! ^^

Life's Simple Pleasures

1. Sleeping in without setting an alarm
2. Breakfast (contradicting, I know)
3. Having the radio play one of your favourite songs
4. Having many favourite songs so the chances of the radio playing one of them is higher
5. Mousehunt-ing (it's an application on Facebook and it's ADDICTIVE!)

A Hundred Days

Yakult.

Clarification

When I said friends are no longer as important, I do not mean that I don't need friends or treasure them now.

It simply means that I'm no longer as adamant to keep someone as a friend if he/she no longer reciprocates the relationship.

F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

No, this post is not about the sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S. It's about me. So if you're not interested, just click the X on the top right hand corner of your window.

At this point in life, friends are no longer as important as before. Sure, on a day to day basis, they still play an important role, but overall, it doesn't matter to me a much that they come and go.

Perhaps, it's because being my friend is tough. To be my best friend is even tougher.

I admit that I do have a set of rather high morals (relative to others, in this current day and age). To make things worse, I expect my friends to somewhat fall within those morals and my best friend(s) to fit most of the morals.

Some of them may seemed to fit initially. But over time, people change. Situations change. Their morals change. (This is what some of us call "flexible morals.")

And when they go, I'm left alone.

Disappointed.

Sometimes, ignorance is really bliss. Sure, I do treasure and care for my friends. I still want to be there for them in times of need. But there are some secrets that are so deep and dark that I prefer never to know of.
And then there's the case that I'm being accused.

It feels lousy when your friends, whom you think understand you, turn around and accuse you of things that they should know you'll never do.

Okay, that's a mouthful. Let's have an example.

For instance, you have a strong stand against pre-marital sex. But your friend think (and maybe spread) that you had sex with your boyfriend (and maybe not boyfriend. Just some guy). How innocent?!

My friendships are built on trust, time, love and loads more. And beneath all these, there're morals. Some traits that are against my morals (e.g. cheating in tests) can be tolerated and turned a blind eye towards (though I will nag and discourage such behaviour). Others like treasuring life and family, treating living things and relationships with care, and being firm in his/her grounds (when they are ethically right) are harder to be compromised.

Then again, it's based on my morals. How selfish can I get?

I want (prefer?) a man...

Who isn't afraid to hold my hands in front of his friends;
Who do what is right, even though it may be unpopular.
Who will wear the wedding band to work.

I want a man who knows the importance of all these small little things. Because it's the little things that count.

Exchange no more!

Yay!

I just realised that I no longer multiply by 5 everytime I buy something in Singapore! No more comparison between China RMB and Singapore Dollar!

Then again, I also realised that it's almost 1st September, two months after my return. Am I lagging or what? :/

It's for life

I'm 22. He's 84.

I'm his grand-daughter for 22 years.

I remember the times when I will run down the long corridor, just to see you sitting at the steps, play cards and waiting for our arrival.

I remember the times when I was young and stayed over at the house, happily messing up the sofa's cushions.

I remember the times when you tempted me with bottles of Yakult.

I remember the soft, chewy candies that must always be there during Chinese New Year, because I like them.

I remember the kuehs, nuts and other yummy stuff you always buy for me.

I remember the 'Heng Hua Bee Hoon' that you cook during Chinese New Year.

I remember you asking me to study hard and get a degree.

I remember the cacti you have which are always long, skinny and tall, just like you.

I remember your hands in mine.

I remember the last look you gave me when I said "Ah Gong, I'm here."

He's 84. I'm 22.

He's my grandpa for life.

Thanks for waiting for me to return. Thanks for giving me such a wonderful mum. Thanks for everything.

Her Majesty announces a week-long holiday throughout Piggidom

Her Majesty, the QueenPig of Piggidom, will be celebrating her birthday alongside the whole kingdom this week.

This is a public notice that all fellow piggies are to go into celebration mode, eat, sleep and be merry. Happiness and love are to fill the air! Anger and sadness are to be swept out of the kingdom for at least a week.

Meanwhile, the administration at Piggidom will also be joining in the fun. Non-piggies of Piggidom are welcomed to partake in the celebrations and to tolerate the messy official website.

Lotsa love,
Ai Ling

P.S. I love all of you! ^^

How small are you?

CNN reports that the explosive death of a star was caught on film.

Apparently, all stars will die someday. It suddenly dawned upon me that the Sun, too, will die. Maybe in a few hundreds or thousands million years later.

A long time, yes. But death is eventual.

What will become of Earth then?

This explosive death reminds me of something. Things may just happen. It's nature. It's a cycle, and in a cycle, there's no start or end.

And it applies for Earth too, I think.

According to Buddhism, it is of little value to debate over how the world started. It's all part of Samsara.

But it does make a difference when you realise we are, but one small insignificant speck in the vast universe. And we haven't even talk about other universes.

And what a chaotic speck we are. Often clashing, often fighting, often at conflicts.

Where is the peace that all of us seek?

We say, we have weapons to protect ourselves. But if none of us have weapons, we can't hurt each other and there'll be no need for weapons.

We say, we fight for truth and justice. But the real truth needs no fighting and is always self-standing.

We say, we execute to have peace. But peace is when we let go of anger and hatred and any ill-feelings - only then can we have peace.

The difference between a dog fight and a war or between two groups of people is only in its organisation.

All these fights... there are all within our minds, right? Second guessing, precaution, attacking as defending... it's all in the mind.

We say, scientific development. But where is the development when all we 'develop' is weapons of mass destruction that aims to kill more faster?

It's time.

To realise how small we are.
To realise that we need to stop.
To realise that what the world is doing is not helping.

Before it's too late.
Before WW3 really start.
Before the Earth is gone before the Sun goes poof.

The Earth is breaking apart

Here's another major earthquake, this time at Sumatra, Indonesia. It showed 6.1 on the Ritcher scale.

Luckily, there's no reported damage or casualities.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Myanmar too had their share of 3-days of mourning. But contrast that with the mourning in China, we can already guess how much resentment there are among the Burmese.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, it seems that Chinese has a amazing will to live. More than a week after the terrible earthquake at Sichuan, there are still survivors being found, albeit tapering off. Here's an account of one survivor. The death toll now tops at 40 000.

As China struggles to house her homeless quake victims, all of us looking at this webpage are probably seated in a comfy chair, with a solid roof over our heads, as well as knowledge that food and water is within reach.

With more calls for help, shouldn't we all do something?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is extremely depressing to read the news. While we have unavoidable natural disasters taking thousands of lives away, we have people fighting each other and have no idea how precious life is.

Although I personally do not believe the John Titor story fully, but it seems highly probably that if we continue to live the way we are living now, doomsday is not far from us.

The Earth is breaking apart without our help. We have done enough to destroy it, but when we start to learn to clear our own shit?

To end off, here's a verse for thought:

If you observe the tree or the grass,
Without knowing it, they exhibit different types and kinds.
There are many different species.

Then observe beetles and moths or small insects like ants;
They exhibit different types and kinds.
There are many different species.

And in the four-footed creatures, both great and small,
They exhibit different types and kinds.
There are many different species.

Observe creatures that crawl on their bellies, snakes and reptiles,
They exhibit different types and kinds.
There are many different species.

Observe fish and those that have the water as their home;
They exhibit different types and kinds.
There are many different species.

Observe birds on the wings, those that travel through the sky.
They too exhibit different types and kinds.
There are many different species.

In these creatures types and kinds can be seen;
In humans no such types or kinds can be seen.

Not in hair or head, not in ears or eyes,
Not in mouth or nose, lips or eyebrows
Is there any great difference.

Not in neck or shoulder, not in abdomen or chest,
Not in genitals is there any great difference.

Not in hands or feet, not in fingers or nails,
Not in calves, thighs or complexion
Are there different types or kinds as there are with other creatures.

Human types do not differ greatly as other species do.
The differences between humans are only differences of convention.
